An Ill Wind: By Ikumoluyi Bola

Poverty has always been the bane of most societies of the world today especially in under developed nations.

In Nigeria statistics has shown that 1 out of 3 Nigerians goes to bed hungry on daily basis. This is an issue that calls for great concern according to the United Nations millennium declaration official report released on January 15 2004 it states that the world is failing to put forward the needed effort regarding hunger and poverty stating further that the problem is not an absolute shortage of food in the world but that the available food and adequate maturation do not get to those who lack money.

The United Nations sept.2000 millennium summit the prime minister great Britain state on behalf of the assembly that by the year 2015 the proportion of the worlds people whose income is less than one dollar a day and the proportion of people who suffer from hunger would have been halved .

All these promises to care for the poor are they being put in place what can really been done to help reduce poverty and lack on our land? It is not enough to say that the government has to look at the plight of the people we as individuals can do well to help.

A great man once said it is not enough to as what your country will do for you but what you will also do for your country. One broken promise may lead to disappointment several broken promises leads to distrust by not keeping their word to care for the poor the government have shown distrust and hopelessness in the minds of the poor.

Over the year in Nigeria weve had several Nongovernmental organizations NGOS rendering humanitarian services to help poor and needy in our society.

These well meaning Nigerians go a long way in making sure that the poor are given the 3 basic necessities of life food clothing and shelter.

This is a step towards ensuring that the poor in our midst are being taken care of.
