After 31 years of producing books and ebooks for hundreds of authors I discovered one thing THE COVER SELLS the guts or text provides the education. If the cover doesn’t sell the book the people never get the education that the writer provided. Whether it’s for fun light reading or deep soul searching if it’s not read it doesn’t do it’s job. Good covers aren’t expensive although I’ve seen 1000 designs that any art department could have done in one day or less. 1 cover 8 hours design at a big city agency will be 1000 or more.
But outsourced to a designer out of the country can be done for 100 or less. Why labor rates vary? When we are in Mexico graphic artist free lance time is as inexpensive as of 18.00 per hour cost plus benefits for 1st year designers sometimes even less and by contract could be even less.And that’s billing rate. 10 year designers are billed at about 25.00 per hour cost. If you want you book to sell you must do a little research.
First Amazon.com what books in your niche or subject specific market are selling like gangbusters. Get a snapshot of the cover and put it in a file … for each cover of a competitive book that’s selling great get a snapshot. Put them all on one sheet for comparison.
Then close your eyes and imagine what your cover would like and how it would look better than’theirs’ and how your best selling cover would appear?
Then take a pencil/pen and paper and sketch what you imagined and send it off to an offshore outsource graphics supplier who specializes in covers.and about 50 and a few days later … your cover is ready.
If you don’t like it you get plenty of opportunity for change until it’s perfect! Buy offshore and love what you get for 10 of the cost.
